Traditional Acupuncture in Nosara, Costa Rica

Depending on your individual Traditional Chinese Medicine assessment, several acupuncture techniques are available, never applied the same way to every patient. Below is an overview of each one.

Every session opens the same way, no matter the technique: your practitioner asks what’s changed since your last visit before touching a single needle, then checks tongue and pulse before recommending the approach that fits your specific situation rather than a generic protocol.

What is traditional acupuncture?

Traditional acupuncture uses extremely thin needles placed at specific points on the body to support the body’s own balance. Most patients report little to no discomfort, and many find sessions deeply relaxing. It’s commonly used for pain, stress, sleep, and general maintenance.

Initial Consultation & First Session: $165 (60–75 min)

Follow-Up Session: $135 (40–50 min)

What is abdominal acupuncture

Abdominal acupuncture is a gentle technique using points on the abdomen, commonly used within Traditional Chinese Medicine to support pain, digestive concerns, fatigue, and women’s wellness. It is often incorporated into a broader treatment plan rather than used as a one-time standalone technique.

Abdominal Acupuncture: $155 (45–60 min)

What is moxibustion?

Moxibustion involves the gentle application of warmth from burning dried mugwort near specific points on the body. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this is used to support circulation and warm areas of the body that feel depleted or cold, often paired with acupuncture in the same session.

Included as part of your acupuncture consultation when appropriate, no separate charge.

What is auricular (ear) acupuncture?

Auricular acupuncture uses fine needles or ear seeds on specific points on the ear, a microsystem believed in Traditional Chinese Medicine to connect to the whole body. At KuHeal, auricular acupuncture and ear seeds may be incorporated as complementary techniques based on your goals and overall assessment, often combined with body acupuncture.

Auricular Acupuncture: $35 (60 min)

What is cheek acupuncture?

Cheek acupuncture is a specialized microsystem technique rooted in the Master Tung tradition, using precise points on the cheek. Within this tradition, these points may be selected for patterns related to pain, digestion, stress, and sleep. It is a distinct, targeted approach and is not a cosmetic treatment. For facial rejuvenation specifically, see AcuLift.

Cheek Acupuncture: $155 (45–60 min)

Do you offer acupuncture without needles?

Yes. If you prefer a needle-free approach, KuHeal offers several Traditional Chinese Medicine techniques that can stimulate acupuncture points or complement an acupuncture treatment without needle insertion.

Depending on your assessment and comfort, these may include acupressure, Feng Lá Acupuncture, moxibustion, and cupping therapy.

Acupressure uses manual pressure on specific acupuncture points. Feng Lá Acupuncture uses non-needle point stimulation together with warmth. Moxibustion uses therapeutic warmth near selected points, while cupping uses suction to address areas of muscular tension.

These techniques may be used on their own or combined with other Traditional Chinese Medicine approaches depending on your goals. They can be a good option for people who are uncomfortable with needles, prefer a gentler approach, or when a non-needle technique is considered more appropriate.

For children, pregnancy, or specific health conditions, treatment is adapted individually after assessment.

Needle-free techniques are included as part of your session when appropriate, with no separate charge.

Why choose acupuncture as part of your routine in Nosara?

Most people turn to acupuncture only once pain or stress has already built up. KuHeal takes a longer view: regular sessions help you notice changes in your energy, sleep, and stress levels early, so your body has consistent support instead of relief that only shows up after the fact.

This approach fits naturally into life in Nosara, where many residents and visitors already think intentionally about movement, food, and time outdoors. Acupuncture becomes one more consistent practice, rather than an emergency measure reserved for when something goes wrong.

Common Questions

Can I have acupuncture if I don't want needles?
Yes. KuHeal offers needle-free options including acupressure, Feng Lá Acupuncture, moxibustion, and cupping. The approach is selected according to your assessment, treatment goals, and comfort level.
Which technique is right for me?
This depends on your goals and current concerns. Your practitioner will recommend the most appropriate technique, or combination of techniques, during your first assessment.
How long does a typical session last?
Sessions generally run 40 to 75 minutes, depending on whether it’s a first visit or a follow-up. See our Contact page for current pricing and durations.
Can I try more than one technique in the same visit?
Yes, in many cases. For example, traditional and abdominal acupuncture, or acupuncture with moxibustion, are often combined in a single session based on your assessment.
How should I prepare for my session?
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows access to your arms and lower legs. Have a light meal one to two hours before your visit, neither a full stomach nor an empty one. Avoid alcohol or recreational drugs, intense exercise, and extreme temperatures like saunas or cold plunges on the day of your session. If you’ve had blood drawn in the past 24 hours, let your practitioner know before your appointment.
Can I have acupuncture if I'm taking blood thinners?
Acupuncture may be appropriate for people taking blood thinners, but your medication and individual bleeding risk should be reviewed first. Always tell your practitioner about anticoagulants, antiplatelet medications, or any bleeding disorder before treatment so the session can be adapted appropriately.

Acupuncture as maintenance. Not emergency. Because living well for the long run starts with what you practice consistently.
